While we in theory endorse Carnegie Museum of Art all year round, we openly admit we usually only pop up when the International exhibit comes to town. So up periscope- just noticed the big sign for Life on Mars this morning looking out the bus window and from the site it looks promising as always. Running from 5/3/8- 1/11/09, it features plenty of artists and you can swing on over to the sight and blog about your experiences at the show. We thought this early post on the germans was amusing.

Murals can be a headache- I’ve done a couple in the past that took enough planning I could have just walked away and done without in the end. But Port Authority’s Romare Bearden mural at the Gateway Centre T station would cost PAT more than $100K to insure annually and it plans to demolish the tract of Subway station it’s housed in with its plans to extend service to the North Shore. However, plans to restore this Pittsburgh Recollections mural are commencing and it will be moved in 4 parts- catch the details in the Trib’s article.

From the press release for installations by Jim Campbell and Mark Scheeff running from 25 April- 21 June at the Wood Street Galleries: “Thermal receipt printers will drop 1’’ by 3’’ slips from the ceiling that contain textual ads representing collective desires. Information was gathered from online personal ads, online prayer sites, and from a database of individuals waiting for an organ transplants—these incarnations of want reflect the universal longing for love, security, and health. The fluttering rain of paper accumulates throughout the duration of the exhibit and slowly fills the space with traces of how life could be different.” Sounds intriguing to us!

SeyrWeyr came across Etsy in a popular magazine hawking someone’s New York chic crafts but anyone can get in on the action and sell their art wares online through Etsy’s local stores. The cool thing about Etsy is you can buy straight from the artist and even cooler, there’s a Pittsburgh version.
Check out EtsyPittsburgh or better yet stop by the EtsyPittsburgh Street Team’s CITYCRAFT MARKET this Saturday 26th April at the Creative Treehouse (which we know personally is a very happening art place and so is in our permanent links). Going on from 12-5 in Bellevue, 517 Lincoln Avenue, 2nd fl. There will be music, demonstrations, refreshments and cool stuff to buy.

I love abandoned stuff. Perhaps it’s trying to imagine what once was or just soaking up the life that’s now taken on in its wake but photos of stuff left behind just tickle me all over. Kurt Tong’s study of the abandoned “People’s Park” in China intersperced with family photos from when it was open is just lovely- check it out along with his other studies of India and the UK. Particularly affecting as well is the black and white series “Where Love Resides.”

So you thought you tossed that bag away safely into a landfill never to be seen again, tidy and done but WoosterCollective has proved us all wrong- someone out there has cleverly crafted little bag animals over the underground grating so that apparently when the train runs by, the air whooshing causes the animal to pop up. Bet you didn’t see that coming!
